Nobody has to be in the same room, or even want the exact same end state, for the same authentication layer to keep expanding.
In that sense, the lack of conspiracy may actually be more worrying. A conspiracy can at least theoretically be exposed or broken up. A distributed ratchet built out of convenience, panic, bureaucracy, and institutional self-interest is harder to stop precisely because no one fully owns it.
So I guess my view is that the warning stands, but the mechanism may be even more insidious than the essay suggests.

Most people live according to a socially conditioned pace, where they take much of their cell phone time for granted and seldom think about being tracked, or about how dependent they are of their smart phone. What is quite amusing, is that when I tell people I don't use any cell phone, they always comment in shock. But that always gets them thinking about how addicted they are to it. A funny story: A few months ago I went through Thai immigration, without a cell phone. When I handed the officer my passport without a cell phone showing my entry card, and said I don't use a cell phone, he screamed at the top of his voice: YOU DON'T USE A CELL PHONE!!!" where every person in the hall heard.

me too (no cell since 2010) and most people can barely believe it or even that i can transact life without it. i haven't flown internationally in 3 yrs; glad you are still able to get thru customs without a spyphone.
As with most State-driven problems (aka solutions) the simple answer is non-participation. I'm glad you stated it, but it's THE thing that most people simply don't get or lack the spine to act upon. Everyone is free to assign their pet reason for why.
My response to this is the same as it's been to everything since I left the Army, many moons ago. "I'm not participating."
The would be potentates and executors of rules, when confronted with that simple statement, honestly have no answer. Lots of sputtering and indignation tend to ensue, but the fact remains. I am not participating.
For my part, I don't mind the friction or the dissonance. I relish it. ;)

no kidding Metta. one reader in oz a few months ago wrote "readers and writers are fleeing" substack because of the just-instated draconian age verification rules.. yet no word AT ALL about it from any SS author that i have seen except one. and then we might consider that SS was started in Oz, perhaps is incorporated there. pretty hard to make the case that children are at risk from a platform as "adult" (in an intellectual, not sexual way) as substack.
