Since I don’t own a television or listen to radio I am not subject to commercials and “entertainment” except in public places where mass media is ubiquitous, however the internet is awash with the stuff.
My interest and hobby is geared to reading articles such as this that highlight the programming inherent in even reading. Careful awareness of the content read, heard AND watched on a screen, is key to not letting the “programming” invade the mind.
That’s my defense and I’m picky about my exposure to all three.
Indeed. It's a bit shocking to me how easy it is for me to ignore them even in apps.
On a related note, I was at a shopping center today getting eyeglasses and there was a sign posted saying that everyone who enters the shopping center automatically gives consent to have their image used for anything. So awful. I feel like I am going to have to dress up in costume to go out into the world, especially given all of the awful glasses coming out. I live in a single consent state which is what makes a sign like that possible.
“... I was witnessing the final performance of a civilization that has forgotten what reality is.”
The Dark Powers-That-Be cannot exist in Their magnificently enslaving thuggish brutality if we humans truly know what Reality is (and who and what We are). That is why those Dark Powers have carefully installed and institutionalized every form of mass-confusion, mass-delusion, and mass-alienation possible into our social structures. The more we don’t know ourselves... the less we know about Reality. And the less we know about the Dark Powers that plague, harm, torture, and amuse us. How nice for Them.
“The game... human bodies moving through space, demonstrating skill, strength, and coordination—represents one of the last connections to authentic physical reality in our entirely mediated existence.”
Yes. But pro sports is also a big part of the Distraction Industrial Complex. Instead of learning about Reality and living it fully, the Dark Ones have installed professional sports as yet another vehicle to amuse, confuse, and distract us all from more pressing and enriching matters. While some may say that Religion is the opiate of the People... the same can be said for watching sports either in person or by means of one of the technological l marvels that most enslave us as well. So many hours by so many people being wasted every single day.
To be honest, I enjoy watching sports. I have spent much of my life throwing a basketball through a hoop – or at least trying to. And so, I can enjoying watching those who can do this a bit better than I can. But here’s the thing. I don’t let this take me away from more important things. I don’t seek fulfillment or live vicariously through these large men (and women) who make obscene amounts of money playing a kids game. I don’t let the social engineering attempts by those who own teams and run sports leagues from having any effect on me.
When they tell us to, “Support our Troups!”... I say – maybe. Depends on what they are doing and why. And are they really, ours? I don't think so. They mostly work for someone else.
When They paint on the football field, “There is no place for Hate”... I say, fine. But why do you Dark Powers hate US so much? Maybe you idiots should look in the mirror first and take the log out of your own eye before you tell me to take a speck out of mine (as a Master said).
When my team scores or wins a game... I say, great. But did 'I' do anything? No, so I don’t get a rush of self-worth out of it. I can gain a measure of satisfaction that a team that I prefer prevailed today. But so what? They’re going to play again and again and again over the years and both sides will win and lose – so what is being accomplished here? I’m supposed to tie my sense of peace and well-being to THAT? I don’t think so.
I keep my sports viewing within prudent limits and with its proper placement of relative importance and significance in my life (which in the case of watching sports is very low importance).
“Every commercial during that basketball game revealed another layer of this inversion. The athletes selling sugar water represent the perfect symbol of fiat culture: figures who achieved real mastery... now prostituting...”.
These guys already have proven to be egomaniacs who are mostly in love within themselves and little else. And so, they have no problem selling themselves for money.
I loved the passion and skill of Michael Jordan. But I don’t need to be told to, ‘Be Like Mike”. Sorry, Mike should be like Mike, not me. I much prefer being like, Me. With all my faults and all my strengths and all my failings and all my gifts. The World already has a Mike (and lots of Mike-Wannbees). The World doesn’t need any more.
I don’t need any celebrity telling me what to do or what to buy or what to think. In fact, I don’t need anyone doing that. My connection is always to the Divinity within me – and that’s more than enough to help guide me through the many minefields of Life.
We’ve all heard that Life is a Game. And in a sense, it is. But that is also misleading because Life is bigger than any Game. It is that which allows Games at all to exist at all. And we are not just players stuck in someone else’s game and with their rules. We make the game and the rules for ourselves. Each of us is his and her own Sport and League unto ourselves. That is, unless we aren’t. And then – Game or not – we lose if we do that.
Don’t spend too much time watching someone else playing Games and living in search of 'Being In The Flow'. Get there yourself. You'll love it. You can do it.
Just remember that you are not some player in someone else’s game. You ARE the Game. And even then, you are more than that.
The real Game is in learning Who and What you really are – and when you do, what you can do with that. And that’s the greatest victory you'll ever know.
"the potential endpoint of fiat culture: the total replacement of authentic human experience with programmed simulation."
While this seems to be the desired endpoint, it won't happen. Real experience is on a different plane, and can't be supplanted any time soon, if ever. I consume electronic media, but the experiences I get hunting and fishing dwarf what I get from media in intensity and pure enjoyment. The same can be said for getting your hands dirty in the garden, and watching plants grow. Interacting with other humans face to face rather than by text or video. More people go out of their way to exercise than ever, because pure physicality can't be replaced artificially. Not to mention sex of course. There is a tug of war all right, but simulation can't win. It requires little effort, so of course people indulge. But it's a distant second to reality.
You should read about the Biodigital Convergence where your digital twin is manipulated and a programmed virtual reality simulation can be overlayed onto your "reality". This is already happening thanks to the nanotechnology biosensors in everyone and everything.
Maybe not for people with the level of awareness that read this type of content, but I’m a little concerned that in thinking that I am committing the cardinal sin of assuming everyone else thinks as I do. They don’t, and I’m not convinced the majority even meet the threshold for “thinking” at all… what many regard as their “thoughts” are arguably simply absorbed narratives.
Agree mostly. I don't assume everybody thinks similar to Stylman readers, that's a minority. I'm pretty sure the majority either can't or won't try to think rationally at all. But I think even most (not all) NPCs will continue to seek out real experiences because they're more rewarding, at least for a good while. To say "simulation can't win" might have been overstating it.
Stylman is learning from what I’m reading. The whole key is for us to “Just say NO.” That’s all it would take and WHY they are so terrified of us. But the masses are sooo hypnotized. They want more technology. It’s suicide for ALL of us.
We are a minority. But do you know what percentage fought and won the American Revolution? 3% of the population fought and won that war. Philosophically and physically. It does not take many to make monumental change.
"But consciousness itself may be the one domain that cannot be entirely artificially replicated. The capacity for genuine awareness, authentic connection, real creation—these emerge from depths that no algorithm can fully map or control. The same spark that allows us to recognize manipulation may be the key to transcending it."
i'm the one who turns around and faces everyone in the elevator to test their reactions (to riff off a book my late beloved had when we first met in '98). i call zapping people back to life via love affairs or deep 3am existential conversations they'd never had, "near LIFE experiences."
people invariably go from attraction to repulsion because there's no support system come daylight for them to sit with all that they learned about THEMSELVES. it's still that way and even worse now. i used to try with whomever came willingly into my orbit, now i try and scare them away to save both of us much time and heart ache.
i call now times a burgeoning renaissance because more people are having such existential conversations and the support system is there now more than in the past few decades. all the screens and psych outs took over more and more.
maybe others don't see it but you've gotta be HUMBLE and recognize there's an eco system and the ones on the bottom socially and economically seem magical but it's only because they/we see what others are too padded to see feel know or admit.
i danced in public on the street because it electrifies and wakes people up in a way they weren't yet defended against. that's why so many of the tech folks around here in sf actually struggled to LOOK AWAY while dancing outside the gym. some attacked me.
interesting...
so even without a career or money just DANCING in public is mad powerful human and defiant.
but the slaves in chains knew this and had all sorts of mind reading songs and messages.
Blessed Be!!!! Thank you for expressing this "truth" so clearly...... so eloquently. I am so grateful to find safe, aware, grounded and intelligent, (both intellectually and emotionally), places to land, sit, enjoy, chew, taste and digest nutritious information and views. It is nourishing to my mind, my heart and my soul. We must keep sharing and caring enough to act on these awarenesses....... Blessings and Gratitude to you. Now to share your article xoxoxo
What a great article! I made the mistake of calling my sister during said game and it was a call in futility. She was totally distracted by it. I never did get ball games. What a waste.
Fun to play at picnics and town gatherings. With WE, The PEOPLE enjoying each other in reality. But Stylman is correct. It has become part of the suicidal hypnotic cult that we call society. Folks MUST KNOW WHO AND WHAT THEY ARE. YOU MUST NEVER REFER TO YOURSELVES AS US CITIZENS AGAIN. THAT IS A CITIZEN OF THE US GOVERNMENT. A LEGAL FICTION AND A FOREIGN CORPORATION. NOT THE LAND AND THE PEOPLE. THE REAL. YOU ARE A CONSTITUTIONAL AMERICAN. A CITIZEN OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA but most importantly a CITIZEN OF YOUR state with a small s. It matters. It is UNDER YOUR ORIGINAL, OLDEST STATE CONSTITUTION CONTAINING THE METES AND BOUNDS BOUNDARIES OF YOUR state. The state you were born in is your birth NATION. Born in Maine? You are a Mainer. Then an American. If the state constitution does not contain the boundaries, it is the legislative copy. A fraud. Never use the legislative copy. It contains none of your rights. THE FREEDOM THERE IN YOUR ORIGINAL STATE CONSTITUTION IS BREATHTAKING. IT OVERPOWERS THE FEDERAL CONSTITUTION, BY LEAPS AND BOUNDS, which only restrains the federal government. Unlimited freedom but for murder, theft, fraud etc., real CRIMES. Statutes are WHOLLY COMMERCIAL. US GOVERNMENT RULES FOR COMMERCE. ONLY. THEY APPLY TO BUSINESS ONLY. NOT THE LIVING. BUT… YOU HAVE AN SSN. YOU ARE A BUSINESS. STATUTES ARE NOT LAW. DIFF WORDS. THEY DO NOT APPLY TO THE LIVING. Find Richard James, Mc Donald on YouTube. Use the comma between first and middle name. Find Eddie Craig right to travel on YouTube. 2.5 hour vid. Great vid. Look for Tao-of-law on YouTube. Find your FREE LIVING MEN AND WOMEN. WE, THE PEOPLE. STOP BEING THIER SLAVE. TAXABLE AND REGULABLE. JUST STOP NOW. YOU CAN YOU KNOW.
I believe the reason people watch basketball will determine what they see and how they respond.
Some just want to be entertained. They may notice the food on the signs or the suggestions players give in commercials for consumption.
Some want to become a Basketball Player. They may notice the shoes and desire to purchase them, as if it will make them better players despite their lack of skill.
Some just want to play basketball. They spend their time thinking about themselves and how to copy a result personally, and little to no time thinking about what clothes to wear.
i hope you do your own books because you're an artist first and foremost (it's in your curiosity and ability to take punches in public and annoy people at dinner parties and look like a conspiracy theorist of olden times). any other publisher might try and slowly attenuate your ideas more and more. it's just how it is.
i think you'll have a series of books as you explore the true burgeoning avant garde or MAKE one as i am making my own underground of one over here in san francisco where i'm kinda trapped behind, and ON enemy lines, for the time being (rent control and my un-employability).
I made the mistake of calling my sister like I said I would during said basketball game and it was a call in futility. She was completely distracted and couldn't care less about what I had to say. I don't get any of the ball games.
..... wow!!! Facebook just took my posting of your article down: "Our technology found that your content doesn't follow our Community Standards. As a result, our technology took action." This is absolutely unbelievable ..... but, I suppose, not after reading your article. I pray that most others begin to truly be aware of the trap that is being set to capture, cage and domesticate the "Wild and Rooted" parts of who we all truly are ...... Blessed Be
I was just recently introduced to Josh through his interviews with Naomi Wolf, and this website has been a real blast - fun, interesting, challenging and enlightening to read.
I started to disengage from consensus reality back in the 90s. Unlike most people I knew, I wasn’t interested in OJ Simpson or Monica Lewinsky, and It wasn't until the election of Shrub and the 9/11 false flag that my attention was caught. Realizations started pouring in and as the saying goes, how can you get them back to the farm once they've been to gay Paree? Here are the principles and method I’ve used to help me navigate the BS:
Principles - Believe nothing... Question everything; If it comes from authority, you must assume it's a lie; The only thing you can ever know for sure is that something might have happened.
Method - Information gathering, logic, pattern recognition, common sense and intuition.
IMO, the only way to attain sovereignty of mind is to follow this maxim which was expressed by Josh in different terms: the mark of an educated mind is the ability to entertain an idea without necessarily accepting it.
I recall that it was said in the Yoga Vasistha that the world is real and unreal. As I see it there are three levels of reality: Ultimate Reality, the only truth, which cannot be spoken of; Consensus Reality, which is the world that has been defined and described for us and in which we live; and Personal Reality, which is our own individual take on the consensus. We have reached the point where many people seem to believe that their personal version of Consensus Reality is the only correct one. Of course, most people don't realize that their point of view is almost entirely the result of constantly reinforced, targeted mind control, manipulation, brainwashing, etc. It's all about narrative. So, whenever I hear someone else express an absolutely bat-shit crazy idea it pulls me up short and I say ‘’wait a minute, what am I missing about myself?’’ Oye!
I am, most thankfully, nearing the end of my life. So now I’m mainly focused on refusing to participate in evil, which is a large chunk but not all of what is going on. My own personal hero is Giordano Bruno the 16th century monk who refused to cave-in to the Roman Catholic Church and was burned at the stake by the Inquisition. I pray I can access this kind of courage when the time comes.
This comment is golden.. "Principles - Believe nothing... Question everything; If it comes from authority, you must assume it's a lie;" I don't mean to correct you.. But it should be replaced with "Principles - Believe nothing... Question everything; If it comes from PERCEIVED authority, you must assume it's a lie;" Just know that authority in of itself is an illusion. A suggestion from a failing entity trying to extend its "Illusion of authority". It's your choice to You are your AUTHORITY and nobody else. It's all about taking radical ownership of YOU..
Thanks for this Josh! I'm glad I found your substack, I remember when you were speaking out against the vaccine mandates in NYC a few years ago, you were one of the few people speaking out publicly. In my early twenties I had an existential crisis that was in some ways connected with my deep gut fears about the influence of advertising in our culture and its effects on the soul. You may appreciate some of Wendell Berry's work, if you have not read him already!
Revolution begins when people realize (by doing) that there's no revolution without political action (which can do more than anything to change people's perceptions). Until then, intellectual or imaginary revision to the perception management that reinforces rule over the many by the few will not fundamentally alter institutionalized social relations of inequality and oppression. On the contrary, we'll simply consent by powerless dissent to a state of captivity summed up by Karl Rove:
“We’re an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you’re studying that reality — judiciously, as you will — we’ll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that’s how things will sort out. We’re history’s actors . . . and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.”
You wrote “When identical scripts appear across hundreds of news outlets, the coordination becomes visible”. I agree.
During the scamdemic, I began the practice of watching the cable TV news, with the sound muted, and just watching the head bobs and the eyebrow raises. But when I changed channels, I saw the exact same mannerisms, but on different announcers. They must have all gone to the same school to learn this art of nudging. Scary? Or funny? I still like to watch the MSM with no sound. I think it’s safer that way – removing at least one of our senses from manipulation seems to help with pattern recognition (maybe).
When I came to America, I found the interrupted shows with a commercial every few minutes maddening. And demeaning. I could not understand how Americans put up with it. Yet, everybody just shrugged. Of course, it's even worse now; those of us who don't own a TV are shocked when we catch a glimpse at a neighbor's. It's much louder, much more garish, much more "here let me hit you over the head with this."
At that time (early 70s) there were no commercials at all in eastern Europe, and western (I knew Austria) would have a series of commercials between programs. Can we go back? :-(
Since I don’t own a television or listen to radio I am not subject to commercials and “entertainment” except in public places where mass media is ubiquitous, however the internet is awash with the stuff.
My interest and hobby is geared to reading articles such as this that highlight the programming inherent in even reading. Careful awareness of the content read, heard AND watched on a screen, is key to not letting the “programming” invade the mind.
That’s my defense and I’m picky about my exposure to all three.
And practiced use of the mute button on the remote for my "dumb" TV when I choose to watch sports...
Don’t forget to ignore the banners placed in front of the bleachers and visual signs on muted commercials.
This is my favorite example of this lately:
"The NFL is removing 'End Racism' from its Super Bowl end zone"
https://www.npr.org/2025/02/08/nx-s1-5290233/nfl-super-bowl-end-racism-end-zone
I wasn't going to be racist but now that the NFL took this banner out of their endzone, I'm reconsidering 🤡 🌍
Indeed. It's a bit shocking to me how easy it is for me to ignore them even in apps.

I suppose that explains why many folks keep a handkerchief around their neck when they are out and about.
Absolutely follow the same protocol. Thanks for articulating it.
Same. I exist In reality only. TV repulsed me as a child for some reason, and I thank our Good Lord for that daily.
Profound all right. We are told we are the consumers when we are actually the consumed.

i think you'll have a series of books as you explore the true burgeoning avant garde or MAKE one as i am making my own underground of one over here in san francisco where i'm kinda trapped behind, and ON enemy lines, for the time being (rent control and my un-employability).
Blessed Be
I would love to know what standard it violated. I'd say this was surprising but it's been the norm on much of what I share for the last 4-5 years.
Community Standards implicitly prohibit the encouragement or development of critical thinking skills.

Thanks, Josh.
It still feels surreal that we lived through in NYC. Glad I escaped, even if things feel "normal" now.
I am not familiar with Wendell Berry's work but will check it out. Thanks for the tip.
No TV is good TV!
